How do I ask the school to pay for an independent evaluation?

Produced by Massachusetts Law Reform Institute & Justice Center of Southeastern Massachusetts
Created February, 2022

Write to the school within 16 months of when they finished their evaluation.

Write to the special education liaison or coordinator. Ask the school to pay for an independent evaluation.

You can ask the school to pay for an independent evaluation that is the same kind of evaluation the school did. If they did not do their own evaluation first, they may want to do their own evaluation before they pay for an independent evaluation.

For example

If the school did their own speech evaluation you can ask for an independent speech evaluation. If they did not do a speech evaluation, and you think your child needs a speech evaluation, the school will probably want to do a speech evaluation first.
