Taxes

Reviewed March 2015

If you have a low income and you work, there are lots of reasons to file your taxes! If you file your taxes in 2024 (taxes for 2023), you could get thousands of dollars back from the government-- even if you did not pay that much in taxes!

You may be able to get:

  • the federal Earned Income Tax Credit,
  • the Massachusetts Earned Income Credit, plus
  • the Child Tax Credit

If you can get all of these credits, it can add up to thousands of dollars!

Get free help filing your tax returns from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Search by the name of your town or zip code for a free tax clinic near you, or call 1-800-829-1040.

It is best to file your tax return before the deadline, April 15, 2024. But you may be able to get some or all of these payments even if you file late. Read the articles in this section for more details, and talk to a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer for advice.

Find Legal Aid

You may be able to get free legal help from your local legal aid program. Or email a question about your own legal problem to a lawyer.
